I use the Scripture Citation Index. It’s free and an app as well. So I can use it on the fly. It also allows me to search the Teachings of the Prophet Jospeh Smith, Journal of Discourses and all Conference Adresses.

    It’s a tremendous resource.

Something recently that I discovered and belie has been lost is that of fasting. What is a true fast. I’m only up to the New Testament as of writing, so my study is not complete. However, from the Old Teatament alone, I can see where this doctrine has been lost.

I recently watched the Science of Fasting and they talked about fasting 10-14 days with only water and how it helps to protect the body, heal it from disease and overcome the minds hold on the body.

They talked about in some extreme cases how a 40 day fast can completely purify the body and give it a reset.

They talked about how between days 2-3 there’s a trial of affliction that body goes through. And once done, the body begins to repair itself and the mind becomes clear again.

So I went back and searched for the time period most fasts were anciently and found out that they were between 3-7 days. Most commonly, 3 days. But why 3?

    Look at 1 Sam 31:13

13 And they took their bones, and buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

These are the men that took the bones of Saul and Jonathan after they were killed and defiled. They fasted for 7 days. Who can fast for 7 days? When in the context of a water only fast it’s quite possible.

In connection with the Leviticus Law surrounding the touching of a dead body in Num. 19:11-12

11 ¶ He that toucheth the dead body of any man shall be unclean seven days.

12 He shall purify himself with it on the third day, and on the seventh day he shall be clean: but if he purify not himself the third day, then the seventh day he shall not be clean.

The 3rd day they become pure and by the 7th day are cleansed.

I’ll let you know more of what I find after my study is complete with the New Testament, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants and Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith.

The notion that fasting should only be 2 meals isn’t consistent with scripture. That much is seen, but when it changed I’m thinking it was during Joseph F. Smith’s ministry when he was defining a lot of things for the Church.

    • Thank you for sharing this!!!

What a great topic to study. I am excited to hear more about your research and to integrate the true doctrine of fasting into the amalgamated history and scriptures of the LDS Restoration Project.

      Thank you for sharing this.

On a personal note, I have recently done a two week food fast. ( only drinking water )because of a health issue that I am dealing with.

I hope to blog about my experience at some point in the future but I am convinced that fasting is a huge aspect of health and wellness as well as an integral part of the gospel and of spiritual purification, etc..

I forgot to add that during the 3 day fast and affliction of the body or ordeal as the documentary calls it, the body shuts down and protects its healthy cells from disease. They become a fortress. During the purifying process of a fast after touching a dead body, it’s a protection from disease that might be associated with the dead.
