In the very early stages of the restored church, the prophet Joseph received three separate revelations directed Oliver Cowdery, Hyrum Smith, and David Whitmer, respectively. Each of these revelations began the same way:
“A GREAT and marvelous work is about to come forth unto the children of men.”
Notice from these revelations that the Marvelous Work that Isaiah prophesied about, and that Nephi elaborated on, had not yet begun. Neither the First Vision or the coming forth of the Book of Mormon represented the beginning of the Marvelous work and a wonder. Even after the formal establishment of the restored church, the Lord reiterated that the great work was yet future. (D&C 35:7)
Those three revelations are a great place to start this post since we are going to be taking a look at some of the 3rd watch prophesies contained in the revelations received by Joseph Smith, however, I have decided to put a little less emphasis on that topic and a little more emphasis on another one in this part of the series.
The reason for my change of emphasis has to do with some observations and questions someone recently asked me which I will discuss shortly.
Sections 6, 11, and 14 have another narrative in common. In those sections God commands these first elders of the church to “say nothing but repentance unto this generation” and “declare nothing but repentance to this generation“.
Similarly, section 19 commands Martin Harris to declare glad tidings to the world but to only speak of repentance, faith and remission of sins through the baptism of water, fire and the Holy Ghost. Apparently, the spiritual rebirth falls under the topic of repentance. HOWEVER, He was not to discuss “tenets” of the gospel:
“And of tenets thou shall not talk, but thou shalt declare repentance and faith on the Savior, and remission of sins by baptism, and by fire, yea , even the Holy Ghost” ( Doctrine and Covenants 19:31 )
According to the 1828 Websters Dictionary, a tenet is “Any opinion, principle, dogma or doctrine which a person believes or maintains as true..”
With all of the amazing things that God was revealing through Joseph Smith, why should the gospel message to that generation of people, begin and stop with the invitation to repent through faith and the spiritual rebirth?
What about additional doctrines?
Why were the first elders commanded to not pontificate on the deeper doctrines to that generation?
What about the mysteries?
Why only milk?
I would submit to you that the answer is found time and again in both the Book of Mormon and the D&C.
God knew that the Gentiles of that generation would not repent, therefore, there was no need for them to try and move beyond the commandment to repent. What good are higher commandments and mysteries if the church is under condemnation, and won’t repent?
The Book of Mormon testifies numerous times that the Gentiles of the restored church would not get past the commandment to repent.
When God’s people refuse to hearken to his voice after being commanded to repent, God withdraws his spirit
“I, the Lord, am angry with the wicked; I am holding my Spirit from the inhabitants of the earth.” (D&C 63:32)
When God’s people refuse to receive more, that which they have already been given is taken away:
30 For behold, thus saith the Lord God: I will give unto the children of men line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little; and blessed are those who hearken unto my precepts, and lend an ear unto my counsel, for they shall learn wisdom; for unto him that receiveth I will give more; and from them that shall say, We have enough, from them shall be taken away even that which they have.”
It is no wonder that virtually every major teaching of the gospel of repentance that was initially taught, has been changed by the modern corporate church has been taken away and replaced with the teachings and wisdom of man.
We are informed that trusting in the precepts of man is a major stumbling block for the Gentiles, who, continue to deny God, from day to day:
31 Cursed is he that putteth his trust in man, or maketh flesh his arm, or shall hearken unto the precepts of men, save their precepts shall be given by the power of the Holy Ghost.
32 Wo be unto the Gentiles, saith the Lord God of Hosts! For notwithstanding I shall lengthen out mine arm unto them from day to day, they will deny me”
A little over a decade after sections 6, 11 and 14 had been given, (and after the saints had rejected the fulness and after God had rejected the church with their dead), Hyrum Smith, as the sole President of the Church, read a revelation about polygamy to the Nauvoo High Council and also to the Nauvoo City Council.
He informed members of the High Council that his brother Joseph had received the revelation containing the secret doctrine, and that now that those men had heard it read, they must live it or be damned. His declaration that multiple wives was necessary for salvation is odd, given the fact that the fulness was declared to be on the earth over a decade earlier yet polygamy had been condemned back at that time.
“Now, you that believe this revelation and go forth and obey the same shall be saved, and you that reject it shall be damned..” (See the introduction of “The Nauvoo City and High Council Minutes Introduction XXViii by by Dinger and also “‘Illicit Intercourse’ Plural Marriage and the Nauvoo Stake High Council, 1840-44 by Gary James Bergera, John Whitmer Historical Association Journal 23 (2003) 64-67 )
By revealing this doctrinal “mystery” about celestial polygamy and commanding these people to live it or be damned, Hyrum was violating the commandment he had been given by the Lord back in 1829, to “say nothing but repentance to this generation”
God had not commanded Hyrum to reveal higher doctrines or expound on the mysteries. He was to say nothing but repentance unto that unrepentant generation.
Even if the revelation on polygamy had been a true revelation about a higher law, (which it wasn’t) it would have been in violation of the commandment he had been given to be talking about it and commanding people to live it.
The Spiritual Rebirth is Necessary for the Redemption of Zion. It is the manifestation of the spirit that one receives after the water baptism that is one of the fruits of the fulness. Having a smile on ones face as one comes out of the water is not adequate. One must be born of the spirit.
Clearly, the true baptism of water, fire, and the Holy Ghost had been taken from the earth, the Lord had begun withdrawing his spirit, and the saints had been left in darkness by the time the events leading up to the martyrdom took place in Nauvoo. The scriptures tells us how Zion is going to be redeemed by those that were anointed to do so during Joseph’s ministry. Until those servants return to the Lord’s vinyard, people cannot fully REPENT, and enjoy the second comforter. It is currently impossible for someone that has not repented of the sins of the Gentiles to be worthy of it.
The reason the topic of repentance is so vital to the topic of how Zion will be redeemed, is because failure to repent prevents those who haven’t been spiritually reborn from being visited with the manifestation of God’s spirit.
Many of those that had been spiritually reborn during the time of Joseph’s ministry were unable to RETAIN a remission of their sins when they reverted back to their old sins. In #8 of this series we will note how the early Kirtland era saints temporarily repented of certain abominations they had been involved in, but then returned to them after the fulness of the gospel was rejected in 1834. This is the reason the Gentile Church of the restoration failed to redeem Zion. We need to learn from the mistakes of our past and not be presumptuous enough to assume we can take matters into our own hands before those who hold the keys return to the vineyard.
Furthermore, failure to repent when the first laborers of the last kingdom return, will be the reason that most of the endowed Latter day Saints will be trodden under the foot of man. As we progress further into the topic of how Zion is going to be redeemed, we need to understand some of the key components of the delusion that Latter day Saints are currently under.
The Salt that Lost its Savor
In earlier parts of this series, we focused on the prophecy in Micah that speaks of the remnants of Jacob treading down the wicked Gentiles in the 3rd watch. The scriptures also use the phrase to describe those that had to flee the lands of their inheritance because of disobedience.
Zion will be Redeemed by the Shedding of Blood
The prophecies we are going to review, about this upcoming blood shedding event may offend the sensitivities of some Mormons, but it needs to be remembered that the opportunity was extended for the land of Zion to be redeemed in a peaceable way, through purchasing the lands of inheritance with money.
The initial warning was that Zion would need to be redeemed either by money or blood.
If the saints failed to redeem the land of Zion peaceably, by repenting and purchasing the lands of inheritance, in the second watch, Zion would need to be redeemed by the shedding of blood by the army of Israel, in the 3rd watch. Those are the only two ways that a Zion inheritance could be obtained:
29 Wherefore, the land of Zion shall not be obtained but by purchase or by blood, otherwise there is none inheritance for you”. D&C 63:29
We are informed in the parable of the redemption of Zion that the saints would be successful in making the purchase before they are finally compelled to reclaim it by the shedding of blood.
Why did the purchase not suffice?
Because they did not repent.
55 And the lord of the vineyard said unto one of his servants: Go and gather together the residue of my servants, and take all the strength of mine house, which are my warriors, my young men, and they that are of middle age also among all my servants, who are the strength of mine house, save those only whom I have appointed to tarry;
56 And go ye straightway unto the land of my vineyard, and redeem my vineyard; for it is mine; I have bought it with money.
57 Therefore, get ye straightway unto my land; break down the walls of mine enemies; throw down their tower, and scatter their watchmen.
58 And inasmuch as they gather together against you, avenge me of mine enemies, that by and by I may come with the residue of mine house and possess the land.
Isaiah notes that the saints in the 3rd watch had previously gone to Zion to sojourn but had been unjustly oppressed.
Clearly, the revelations received by Joseph Smith reveal that unwise things were done and said by the saints in Jackson County, that threatened the unbelieving Gentiles. But that did not justify the unbelieving Gentiles to do what they did in casting out the Saints.
The previous purchase of, and the subsequent casting out of God’s people from the lands of their inheritance, makes possible the final justified acquisition by force:
1 AWAKE, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean.
2 Shake thyself from the dust; arise, and sit down, O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion.
3 For thus saith the LORD, Ye have sold yourselves for nought; and ye shall be redeemed without money.
4 For thus saith the Lord GOD, My people went down aforetime into Egypt to sojourn there; and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.
5 Now therefore, what have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for nought? they that rule over them make them to howl, saith the LORD; and my name continually every day is blasphemed.”
The previous passage offers the provocative observation that the apostate church blasphemes the name of God on a daily basis. Because of this, the unrepentant Saints of the restoration will be trodden down when the army of Israel goes forth.
The Lord has made a sobering declaration that when those of his church enter into the everlasting covenant of baptism and then break it, refusing to repent when the opportunity is extended, they will be trodden under the foot of men:
“When men are called unto mine everlasting gospel, and covenant with an everlasting covenant, they are accounted as the salt of the earth and the savor of men;
40 They are called to be the savor of men; therefore, if that salt of the earth lose its savor, behold, it is thenceforth good for nothing only to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men”. (D&C 101)
In a follow up revelation, the Lord reiterates the warning:
“VERILY I say unto you, my friends, behold, I will give unto you a revelation and commandment, that you may know how to act in the discharge of your duties concerning the salvation and redemption of your brethren, who have been scattered on the land of Zion;
2 Being driven and smitten by the hands of mine enemies, on whom I will pour out my wrath without measure in mine own time.
3 For I have suffered them thus far, that they might fill up the measure of their iniquities, that their cup might be full;
4 And that those who call themselves after my name might be chastened for a little season with a sore and grievous chastisement, because they did not hearken altogether unto the precepts and commandments which I gave unto them.
5 But verily I say unto you, that I have decreed a decree which my people shall realize, inasmuch as they hearken from this very hour unto the counsel which I, the Lord their God, shall give unto them.
6 Behold they shall, for I have decreed it, begin to prevail against mine enemies from this very hour.
7 And by hearkening to observe all the words which I, the Lord their God, shall speak unto them, they shall never cease to prevail until the kingdoms of the world are subdued under my feet, and the earth is given unto the saints, to possess it forever and ever.
8 But inasmuch as they keep not my commandments, and hearken not to observe all my words, the kingdoms of the world shall prevail against them.
9 For they were set to be a light unto the world, and to be the saviors of men;
10 And inasmuch as they are not the saviors of men, they are as salt that has lost its savor, and is thenceforth good for nothing but to be cast out and trodden under foot of men.
11 But verily I say unto you, I have decreed that your brethren which have been scattered shall return to the lands of their inheritances, and shall build up the waste places of Zion.
12 For after much tribulation, as I have said unto you in a former commandment, cometh the blessing.
13 Behold, this is the blessing which I have promised after your tribulations, and the tribulations of your brethren—your redemption, and the redemption of your brethren, even their restoration to the land of Zion, to be established, no more to be thrown down.
14 Nevertheless, if they pollute their inheritances they shall be thrown down; for I will not spare them if they pollute their inheritances.”
In those passages, the Lord promises that from that hour, in February of 1834, either the Lord’s people of the restoration, would begin to prevail over the kingdoms of the world, or the kingdoms of the world would begin to prevail against God’s people.
Which way did it go?
Which promise has been fulfilled.
The declaration was drawing upon the theme in Daniel’s prophecy about the stone that goes forth smashing the kingdoms of the world, ushering in the Millennium.
So what happened?
Did the kingdom of God begin prevailing over the kingdoms of the world or did Babylon overcome the restored church and their attempt to establish Zion?
The quick and dirty answer is found in the Book of Daniel:
” I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them; Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom. (Dan 7:21-22)
History confirms that Babylon prevails against the Saints.
Here is a brief sampling of four major historical indicators that took place shortly after God’s unconditional promise in February of 1834, that either Babylon would emerge and prevail over God’s people or God’s kingdom would emerge and prevail over the kingdoms of the world:
April of 1834 the Lord announces that the “Covenants [had been] broken through transgression”, bringing the two year attempt at consecration to an end. (D&C 104)
May 3 1834 A Special Conference was called to take the name of Christ out of the name of the church. The name was changed from the “Church of Christ” to the “Church of the Latter day Saints”. (HC 2:62-63)
June 22, 1834 The Lord declares that the redemption of Zion and the faithful observance of her laws must “wait for a little season”. (D&C 105)
December 5th 1834 A revelation is received declaring that both leaders and members of the church are condemned and that a reformation of all things must take place. (UnPub Rev Pg 73)
The historical evidence is pretty clear.
Of course, another way to evaluate it is to simply look around at the current state of the world and the current state of the apostate church. Clearly, Daniels prophesy of the stone rolling forth, breaking up the kingdoms of the world has not taken place nor is it currently under way. (However there is good reason to think it is going to begin within a few years)
Four generations after the prophecy in section 103 was given, we can plainly see that Satan rules this world and those claiming to be his church as much or more now, than he ever has in the past.
Clearly, a global secret combination has control over the nations of the world. Conversely, those of the apostate church who claim to be prophets, seers and revelators have long since lost sight of Zion and embraced members of the secret cabal with secret handshakes. The focus of the leadership of the church has turned towards accumulating obscene riches from the widows mite. They are frantically acquiring real estate and building malls as if the world is coming to an end… oh, that’s right, it is!
While the signs of the times are all around us, the brethren are gallantly leading the charge with the Babylonian cry of, “Lets go shopping!!
“He Invites us to Come Closer to Christ”
As previously mentioned, the primary topic of this part of the series was prompted by someone who contacted me the other day and asked the following questions:
“I am currently reading the “second comforter” by you-know-who.
I do not appreciate everything he says and don’t believe he’s right on many points (about history for instance) but I appreciate one thing : he invites us to come closer to Christ.
Do you believe we can have such a personal relation with our Lord ?
and if so, should we seek that communion ?”
I have had lots of similar comments and questions since the current “second comforter- quest for Zion”, spectacle began.
I have addressed the question of why God is not currently giving people the second comforter in previous blogs, however, I have decided to approach the subject a little differently in this series. In the previous blogs I provided numerous passages showing that God has not been speaking to men on this earth since the saints were rejected with their dead in Nauvoo because the Gentiles failed to repent.
In this series I am going to zero in on the fact that the Gentiles are unqualified to receive the second comforter because they have not repented. Indeed, the believing Gentiles even in the fringe movements DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT TO REPENT OF. THEY DON’T KNOW WHAT THEY HAVE DONE WRONG.
Whenever someone tells me that they have been inspired by “you-know-who’s” invitation to come closer to Christ, I am always curious to know why Christ’s own invitation to come unto Christ was not sufficient?
Why doesn’t Christ’s invitation have as powerful of an impact as someone like “you-know-who”?
Seriously, why is it that the countless scriptural invitations from Christ and his apostles don’t seem to change the lives of these people and give them the hope and determination they are looking for, yet the invitation of a false prophet seems to have a huge impact on them.
It reminds me of a passage in the New Testament, wherein Christ was speaking to the unbelieving Jews:
“I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.”
That is a pretty sobering statement that Christ made.
Why is it that people often revere the words of someone that comes in his own name more than the words that Christ gives us?
Why do some people receive the words of You-know-who, yet previously, the words of Christ were unremarkable to them?
Christ condescended and came into this world to suffer for our sins. He has left his testimony in the holy scriptures for all to read. Additionally, he has provided in the holy canon, other testimonies from other eyewitnesses of the resurrection of Christ and his gospel. We even have a relatively recent, “last testimony” from Joseph and Sidney in the D&C.
Having given us those written testimonies, the Lord has promised that those that read the testimonies embedded in scripture, and believe, will be blessed with the manifestation of his spirit.
Is that not sufficient?
So why is it that people don’t seem to perk up and gain a serious hope that they can get closer to Christ, obtain the second comforter and get their calling and election, until a guy that characterizes himself as a divorced, cussing, Harley driving, concert attending, foolish person, tells them that he has done it and that anyone can:
“We all should have this HOPE…I mean of all people who has had an audience with the Lord like a divorced lawyer who rides a Harley, participates along with the seedy crowd on in the Sturgis motorcyle rally,… who uses curse words, who would attend a Rush concert, and who openly admits he is vain, foolish and full of faults and sarcastic. (No offense intended)
This same lawyer has been given the assignment to give each of us the needed hope to literally repent and come unto Christ, that an audience with the Lord is possible (and essential)…”
The most telling part of the storyline above is that the foolish person has been able to enjoy the second comforter without repenting of the sins that have been leveled against the Gentiles in the Book of Mormon! Not only does he neglect to inform his followers that they need to repent of the covenant that they have made with Hell, he, himself has not repented of the covenant he made with Hell! Indeed that covenant with Hell that he entered into is the foundation from which he derives his revelation from, just like all of the other Jim Harston types that have gone before him.
When you get done reading this series you will know exactly what some of the major sins of the Gentiles are, that have not been repented of.
You will know exactly why you, me, President Monson, and “you know who”, have not seen the true Christ and cannot possibly behold his presence at this time, let alone, receive our calling and election.
This is going to be another one of those heart-wrenching topics calculated to leave readers curled up in the fetal position, having convulsions, bleeding from the eyes, and whimpering like a little girl.
My public reply to the myriad of people that have asked similar questions to the one I quoted above, is as follows:
“The short answer to your question is that nobody can obtain the second comforter and/or get their calling and election until after they REPENT.
Sadly, you have not repented, President Monson has not repented, “you-know-who” has not repented and I have not repented.
Nobody in this current generation has fully repented yet according to the Book of Mormon and the commandments that Joseph revealed.”
We are informed that the day of repentance takes place in the 3rd watch, when the first laborers of the last kingdom are sent AGAIN, for the last time, to finally MAGNIFY their original callings. At this time they will-
“bind up the law, seal up the testimony and prepare the saints for the hour of judgment which is to come“.
Notice the following prophecy in section 88 wherein the Lord tells the first elders of the church to prepare themselves for the time when he will send them again to testify and warn the people for the last time:
“That ye may be prepared in all things when I shall send you again to magnify the calling whereunto I have called you, and the mission with which I have commissioned you.
81 Behold, I sent you out to testify and warn the people, and it becometh every man who hath been warned to warn his neighbor.
82 Therefore, they are left without excuse, and their sins are upon their own heads.
83 He that seeketh me early shall find me, and shall not be forsaken.
84 Therefore, tarry ye, and labor diligently, that you may be perfected in your ministry to go forth among the Gentiles for the last time, as many as the mouth of the Lord shall name, to bind up the law and seal up the testimony, and to prepare the saints for the hour of judgment which is to come”
As you can see from the unconditional declarations above, the Lord is going to send his servants among the Gentiles again, for the last time. In previous posts we have documented the passages of scripture that inform us that Joseph and his brethren are the ones who have been given the keys of the kingdom and have been anointed to return to complete their assignments at the appointed time.
The good news for those that repent when the first laborers of the last kingdom return is that the heavens will open again and those that repent will see the Lord and be comforted, if they seek him early, before the wrath of God hits the earth.
Section 65 is an inspired “prayer” about the future return of God’s servant “from above” in the 3rd watch, whose voice goes to the ends of the earth declaring the same message of repentance that John the Baptist declared:
“Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight”.
That is the exact same declaration John the Baptist made after commanding that generation of Jews to repent.
“Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
If the apostate church has repented and is in good standing with the Lord, why the need for a servant from above to prepare the way and make his paths straight in the 3rd watch by commanding everyone to repent?
In the prophetic prayer, the servant from above commits the keys of the kingdom to man on the earth for the final time.
“the keys of the kingdom are committed unto man on the earth, and from thence, shall the gospel roll forth unto the ends of the earth”
If the apostate church has the keys of the kingdom that Joseph had in this world and in the world to come, (D&C 90:3) why the need for this servant from above to return and commit the keys to mortal man again ?
The inspired prophetic prayer in section 65 does not bode well for the truth claims of the apostate church or any Jim Harmston types that are attempting to take matters into their own hands and set the church in order by re-baptising and setting up communities.
You Can’t Bypass Repentance
Once the Lord commands a people to repent, He then finds it very offensive when they refuse to repent, yet seek Christ’s comfort and aspire to their calling and election, thinking they can bypass repentance and enter into the presence of the Lord.
One of the major narratives of the last days in the Book of Mormon is that:
1- the Gentiles are commanded to repent
2- while attempting to repent, they cumulatively fail to do so as a group, and stumble.
3- Many generations later, after the knowledge of the gospel is taken from the stumbling gentiles to other remnants of Israel, an extremely small portion of the believing gentiles do repent and are gathered to Zion.
The Unrepentant will Seek the Second Comforter in Vain
It is in vain for a gentile to seek the second comforter and their calling and election when they have not repented.
A Gentile simply cannot repent until they understand what they need to repent of.
In part eight of this series about how Zion will be redeemed, I am actually going to attempt to explain, doctrinally and historically, what some of the major sins of the Gentiles are. These sins have been hidden in plain sight from Mormons for four generations, but I believe a preparatory awakening is now taking place.
If you are an endowed Mormon, you are going to be shocked to realize that you are guilty of practicing and/or supporting the very abominations and combinations that the Gentiles were commanded to forsake. Indeed, these Satanic abominations and combinations have been integrated into the endowment ceremonies and commandments of the apostate church and have become foundational to modern Mormonism. We have received these false traditions from our fathers.
If you are able to keep reading this series until it is finished, and if you are able to believe what you are about to read, there will be no question in your mind about the foolishness and delusional state, not only of the apostate church, but also of those claiming they have had an audience with the true Christ.
Virtually all of the Jim Harmston types who have tried to set the church in order, began getting their extra curricular visions and visitations while putting their faith in the Satanic Jesuit-Masonic Endowment and so-called “true order of prayer” that Brigham Young introduced into the church.
The truth is that the vast majority of temple endowed Latter day Saints will be trodden under foot as salt that has lost its savor instead of gathered to Zion because they have made a covenant with hell and have not repented of it.
When the servants return and tell the LDS gentiles about their sins, many of the latter day saints that have been endowed, will reject the rebuke and call to repentance in utter astonishment and disbelief. This is because they will not be able to accept that the ritual they believe to be the most holy ordinance of the restored gospel, is a false one, even though it cannot be justified in the scriptures and is actually a covenant with Satan which literally fulfills the prophecy in chapter four of the Book of Commandments:
“…If this generation do harden their hearts against my word, behold I will deliver them up unto Satan..”
We live in the time Isaiah referred to, where the deception is so thick that good is called evil and evil is called good.
“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”
The believing Gentiles have stumbled and have been delivered over to Satan for a little season.
In part 8 of this series we shall talk about the stumbling stones of the believing Gentiles and about the significance of false temple worship
to be continued if you have the intestinal fortitude to keep reading this series.
